LESTER ROSEN, FOUNDER & CEO
Attorney Lester S. Rosen is Founder & CEO of Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), a nationwide background check firm located in the San Francisco, CA-area and accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). He is a nationally recognized background check expert and the author of "The Safe Hiring Manual" (3rd Edition/2017), the first comprehensive guide to employment screening. He is a frequent presenter on safe hiring issues and his speaking appearances for "ESR Speaks" include numerous state and national conferences.
Rosen graduated UCLA with Phi Beta Kappa honors, and received a J.D. degree from the University of California at Davis School of Law, serving on the school Law Review. After practicing in the Orange County offices of Kindel & Anderson, a larger Southern California law firm, for three years with an emphasis in civil litigation and employment law, he joined the Riverside County District Attorneys office. His duties included career criminal and homicide prosecutions.
Rosen opened a private criminal law practice in Marin County in 1985. He specialized in criminal law and his practice has included federal crimes and death penalty cases. He holds the highest attorney rating of A.V. in Martindale-Hubbell. He has served as an adjunct professor of law teaching criminal law and procedure at Hastings College of the Law, and has served as faculty member and program chairman of the nationally recognized Hastings College of Trial Advocacy.

In 1996, Rosen joined with an established background and corporate security agency, the Doane Agency, to create a new firm in 1997, Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) (a division of a California Corporation), dedicated to promoting a safe and profitable workplace for both employers and employees. In 2003, that firm was rated as the top screening firm in the US in the first independent study of the industry in research report prepared by the Intellectual Capital Group, a division of HR.com.
Rosen has qualified and testified in the California, Florida, and Arkansas Superior Court as an employment screening expert on issues surrounding safe hiring and due diligence. In 2000, he testified as an expert on background screening on behalf of the plaintiff in a case where the jury awarded 9.3 million dollars to the family of a doctor murdered by a carpet cleaner who was hired without any background investigation.
Rosen was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the NAPBS, a professional trade organization for the screening industry. He was also elected to the first board of directors and served as the co-chair in 2004. As a background screening expert, he has been quoted by USA Today, Businessweek, Reuters, Christian Science Monitor, HR Magazine, and numerous newspapers, web sites, and trade journals across the United States.
He is also creator of a comprehensive Online Safe Hiring Certification Course, and narrator of the training video "Safe Hiring: How You Can Avoid Bad Hires" by Kantola Productions. He has written numerous articles and whitepapers on the subject of employment screening and selects the annual ESR Top Ten Background Check Trends.
Rosen has authored a module of the Global HR Practitioner Handbook Volume 3 published by Global Immersion Press titled “Criminal History Screening of Global Job Applicants: Hidden Dangers Employers Should Know.” He co-authored the ‘International Employment Background Checks’ module in the Global HR Practitioner Handbook Volume 2 from Global Immersion Press.
Rosen has also been active in working on legislation in California. In 2002, he worked with the California legislature to amend AB 655, a law that adversely affected employers in the area of reference checks and hiring in California. BRAD LANDIN, PRESIDENT
Background screening industry veteran Brad Landin joined the Employment Screening Resources (ESR) management team in April of 2011 and assumed the role of President in September of 2011. He is responsible for all aspects of the company's strategy, operations, and finances. He brings more than 35 years of management experience in both the private and public sectors and over 25 years of experience in regulated industry compliance matters.
Landin has spearheaded ESR’s rise to being “The Background Check Authority®” and the only screening provider offering automated real-time compliance. The ESR Assured Compliance® system uses the fully automated ESR Applicant Generated Report® (AGR) system to constantly update screening reports with required changes in hiring and employment laws. ESR makes compliance with new screening regulations virtually painless in a totally paperless environment.
Under Landin’s leadership, ESR successfully completed a stringent Service Organization Control 2 (SOC2) audit that found ESR maintains security, confidentiality, and privacy of screening system data. This SOC 2 report ensures ESR meets the current high standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to protect customer and third-party information. ESR has all appropriate controls in place to secure and protect information systems and databases.
Before joining ESR, Landin worked in the screening industry since 1999 and was instrumental in making an industry startup one of the top 25 background screening firms as measured by revenue. Landin also has extensive experience in background screening operations, as well as legal compliance, and is an active participant in the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), the background screening industry trade association, including a role in their lobbying efforts at the federal and state levels.
JAMES CROCKETT, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, OPERATIONS AND FINANCE
James “Jim” Crockett joined ESR in November of 2000 and assumed his current role as Executive Vice President, Operations and Finance in September of 2011. He is one of the ESR’s longest tenured and most experienced leadership team members having an unequalled knowledge of all facets of the business. Jim oversees all aspects of the company's operations, financial matters, and facilities security. He is also a licensed private investigator in the State of Nevada (NV PI #1703).
Jim has a rich history of working within the human resources management sector. Prior to joining ESR, he was with a software company specializing in employee handbooks, online sexual harassment training courses, and other HR related products. Before that, he served twelve years in management for a national retailer where he had extensive experience in operations development. In addition to his career in the private sector, Jim served three years on active duty in the United States Army and served an additional three years in the Army Reserve.
KIRK BOGUE, VICE PRESIDENT OPERATIONS
Kirk Bogue joined ESR in September of 2017 as Vice President Operations with overall responsibility for ESR’s operations and client services. As a seasoned professional both inside and outside of the screening industry, Kirk brings ESR a wealth of executive management experience in operations, client services, business and product development, applied technology, as well as organizational and leadership development.
He was on a fast track leadership path at Conoco and was Vice President at ACNielsen/Dun& Bradstreet and ADP, as well as two notable companies within our industry, ChoicePoint where he was Vice President, Strategic Product Development, and ClearStar where he was Vice President, Strategic Initiatives & Technology Services.
In addition to his operations and product development experience, Kirk was Vice President of Client Services at ADP for four years. He is client focused and believes that enduring business relationships are built on a foundation of integrity and respect. He holds a bachelor of science degree in Computer Information Sciences from the University of Florida which enabled him to manage large development projects and software development teams in several of his prior positions. The combination of operations, client services, and technology competencies makes Kirk uniquely qualified to help deliver and improve upon our technology-driven professional screening products and services. Kirk is committed to truly understanding, anticipating, and serving our clients’ ever-changing needs.
He also brings experience in leadership and corporate development. Kirk served as a member of the Advisory Board for the Kennesaw State University Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics, and Character, and has worked as a professional consultant in these areas. This background will help our leadership further develop our people-focused culture that promotes professional and personal growth that increases the effectiveness of our people and the quality of the services that we deliver.
DAWN STANDERWICK, VICE PRESIDENT STRATEGIC GROWTH
Dawn Standerwick joined ESR in April of 2015 as Vice President Strategic Growth. A seasoned industry professional, Dawn strongly enhances ESR’s management team with prior executive management experience in operations, sales, business development, marketing, and online solutions. She brings 24 years of experience in all facets of workforce screening solutions with extensive knowledge of background screening, drug testing, and occupational health testing. Her areas of responsibility with ESR include sales, business development, brand marketing, and client success.
Prior to joining ESR, Dawn held senior positions in the screening industry as Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and most recently as Vice President of Business Development. In addition to her employment work experience, Dawn has been called upon as background screening subject matter expert.
Dawn is a long time member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) and was elected Chair of the NAPBS for the 2016-17 term. The NAPBS is the industry’s professional association and accreditation body of which ESR is a founding member. She is actively involved on the NAPBS government relations committee and participates in legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of the association. She regularly meets with legislators and governmental agencies including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in Washington DC to promote common interests of Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) and Human Resource professionals alike.
Dawn served on the Board of Directors for HR Tampa, Florida’s largest Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Chapter, as a co-director of Sponsorships in 2013, and is currently a member of SHRM and the Mile High SHRM Chapter in Denver, Colorado. She has been quoted in publications such as USA Today and SHRM HR Magazine.
CHELSEA ROSE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GLOBAL ENTERPRISE SOLUTIONS
Chelsea Rose joined ESR in May of 2017 as Executive Director, Global Enterprise Solutions. She brings ESR a strategic approach to working with clients to ensure that each organization receives a solution tailored to meet their needs that delivers real value. Chelsea has in-depth experience engineering enterprise level global accounts, designing implementations, rollout plans, and custom integrations. She believes that sales is a consultative partnership whose goal is having users and program owners equally satisfied. Chelsea gained important insight into employers’ expectations along with an appreciation of the importance of a high-quality candidate experience from her time spent working in the staffing industry.
From 2005 to 2010 Chelsea worked in the recruiting industry including two years with Robert Half International where she was the #1 ranked producer in specialized accounting staffing. She moved from recruiting to the background screening industry in 2010 joining industry giant Sterling Infosystems as a regional sales director. After leaving Sterling in 2012, she joined First Advantage and was there for 5-years working on projects to help align sales, technology, products, and workflow to the client’s and applicant’s advantage. Chelsea earned her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of South Dakota in 2004.
JOHN CUMMINGS, DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & CHIEF INFORMATION SECURITY OFFICER (CISO)
John’s experience includes company founder and Technology Director of Sight Design, a web development firm, and shared management of Marinternet, where he executed network and communications hardware design and administration, managed customer service, performed programming for all hosting services, and administrated the company’s day-to-day business affairs. John worked with Marinternet since its inception and until its sale, and was one of the company’s owners. Prior to John’s activities with Marinternet and Sight Design, he spent several years as a programming consultant for several e-commerce and information oriented internet companies, and created numerous CGI tools for several bay area-based ISPs. An accomplished artist, John earned his Bachelors Degree in Fine Art at San Francisco State University in 1991, specializing in Printmaking. He earned his Teaching Credential at Sonoma State University in 1994, and taught middle school and high school art in several Sonoma County schools before transferring his creative skills into computer and Internet-oriented work.
KURT ROHLFES, DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC TECHNOLOGY
Kurt Rohlfes joined Employment Screening Resources (ESR) in 2012 as Senior Programmer and Systems Architect working on proprietary software systems development. In August of 2015, he assumed the role of Director of Strategic Technology. In this role, Kurt develops, implements, and coordinates evolving technology strategies, systems development, and process automation that enhances delivery of ESR’s high-impact services to our customers.
In 2002, Kurt worked on the F.A.C.E.T (future air traffic management concepts evaluation tool) at the NASA Ames Research laboratory utilizing JAVA and custom web integration technologies. In 2005 Kurt joined Abso, a California based background screening company, building and managing the company's internal applications and integrations until its sale in 2010 to Sterling Information Systems. Kurt continued at Sterling for 2 years architecting and managing the company’s next generation systems while helping to converge multiple acquisition systems. He has extensive knowledge with C# .net, Web Services, XML/HRXML, JAVA, PHP, MYSQL, SQL and other database management systems.
THOMAS AHEARN, ESR NEWS EDITOR & SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER
Joining Employment Screening Resources (ESR) in 2010, Thomas Ahearn serves as the ESR News Editor and Social Media Manager. The ESR News Blog provides up to date information about the employment background check industry to employers, HR professionals, security, recruiters, and consumers. ESR News covers a variety of topics including Ban the Box, credit reports, criminal records, data privacy, EEOC, E-Verify, FCRA, international screening, jobs reports, lawsuits, social media background checks, and workplace violence.
As Social Media Manager, Thomas oversees the ESR presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+, and the ESR News Blog Feed, as well as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts. He also updates content on ESR websites, manages the monthly ESR Newsletter, maintains the ESR Whitepapers, and is administrator for the ESR Online Safe Hiring Certification Course. Thomas served as one of the Editors for "The Safe Hiring Manual" (3rd Edition 2017) by ESR Founder & CEO Attorney Lester Rosen.
Before joining ESR, Thomas served as Media Relations Advisor for another employment screening firm and a freelance writer. His education includes a B.S. in Mass Communication/Public Relations from Boston University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Emerson College.
