The ESR Criminal Insight search is a broad multi-state/multi-jurisdiction criminal database search and consists of criminal records, state level sex offender records and national and international watch lists.
Information is sourced from public records information from all 50 states, but, the depth and breadth of criminal information varies widely. This search is commonly and incorrectly referred to by some in the industry as a “national criminal records search”.
The advantage of this search is that it covers a much larger geographical area than traditional county-level criminal searches and are appropriately used as an additional layer of due diligence to locate criminal records that may relate to the subject.
The disadvantage is that available criminal information varies significantly from state to state as do the frequency of updates. For example, in some states, the only criminal records included are prison incarceration records which represent a small percentage of total convictions.
This search should only be used as a companion search to other criminal search options to identify jurisdictions to search for records that are not associated with a residential, work or school address which can be more difficult to locate.
A variety of criminal, sex offender, traffic records, and global sanctions that might be related to the subject of the search. Unless and until the possible is match is verified at the source jurisdiction, the information cannot be legally used, nor can ESR legally report it.
ESR verifies all possible matches by reviewing the primary source (custodian of the record) before including them in a background check report. Failure to do so is a violation of the FCRA.
