Attorney, author, and safe hiring expert Les Rosen, founder and President of San Francisco, CA-area background screening company Employment Screening Resources (ESR), will discuss background checks for home health care workers at a free community forum at the San Rafael Community Center in San Rafael, California on Thursday, March 10, 2011.
As part of the forum’s program covering successful hiring strategies for home health caregivers, Rosen – who authored ‘The Safe Hiring Manual – The Complete Guide to Keeping Criminals, Terrorists, and Imposters Out of Your Workplace’ – will discuss how home health caregivers may use the following materials to help them make safe hiring decisions:
- A Quick Introduction to Background Checks for Home Health Care Givers.
- Ten Safe Hiring Tools for Employers.
- A Description of Pre-Employment Screening Tools.
- A Summary of Legal and Illegal Questions in Job Interviews.
The forum takes on added timeliness after the results of a new government report by the Inspector General for Health and Human Services obtained by CBS News – in which Government investigators ran background checks on all workers employed on June 1, 2009 at 260 nursing homes across the country – found that 92 percent of the facilities hired at least one employee with a criminal conviction and at half of the nursing homes hired five or more individuals with criminal backgrounds.
In the quick introduction to background checks, Rosen – who founded ESR to promote a safe workplace for both employers and employees – advises that, among other things:
- “Gut instincts” are not enough during job interviews,
- The need for due diligence increases with the associated risk,
- Background checks should not give a false sense of security, and
- Online databases alone are not dependable sources for background checks.
Presented by the Marin Center for Independent Living, the forum is scheduled from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM PT on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at The San Rafael Community Center located at 618 B Street in San Rafael, CA. The forum will include interactive discussions with various home health care experts and audience members are encouraged to ask questions during the presentations.
