In response to a government investigation that revealed more than nine out of ten nursing homes hired criminals, San Francisco, California-area Employment Screening Resources (ESR) – a background screening company accredited by The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) – has released background check toolkit for nursing homes and home health care to help them avoid “bad hires” too unqualified, unfit, or dangerous to work with vulnerable populations such as the elderly and infirmed.
A March 2011 government report by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) obtained by CBS News – in which Government investigators ran background checks on all workers employed on June 1, 2009 at 260 nursing homes across the country – has found that 92 percent of the nursing home facilities hired at least one employee with a criminal conviction and that nearly half of the nursing home facilities hired five or more individuals with criminal backgrounds.
According to the report – ‘Nursing Facilities’ Employment of Individuals with Criminal Convictions’ – 98 percent of the nursing homes indicated they conducted some type of criminal background check. Employment Screening Resources (ESR) offers the toolkit ‘Background Checks & Nursing Home/Home Health Care Workers: A Toolbox for Due Diligence’ with important background screening information for nursing homes and home health care providers that includes the following subject matter:
