US Citizenship and Immigration Services Launches I-9 Central Online Resource Center for Form I-9 Guidance

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has launched “I-9 Central” – a free online resource center dedicated to the most frequently accessed form on the website: the Form I-9, Employee Eligibility Verification. I-9 Central will give both employers and employees access to resources, tips, and guidance on how to properly complete the Form I-9 and better understand the Form I-9 process, the USCIS announced in a press release.

I-9 Central provides critical information for all employers in an accessible, intuitive, and comprehensive online format and includes sections about:

  • Employer and employee rights and responsibilities,
  • Step-by-step instructions for completing the form, and
  • Information on acceptable documents for establishing identity and employment authorization.

I-9 Central also includes a discussion of common mistakes to avoid when completing the form, guidance on how to correct errors, and answers to employers’ recent questions about the Form I-9 process. The launch of I-9 Central is the latest addition in the ongoing effort by the USCIS to better serve the 7.5 million employers who use Form I-9 every time they hire an employee and follows the introduction of other employment-related resources that include:

  • The E-Verify Self Check service that allows workers and job seekers in the United States to check their own employment eligibility status online.
  • An updated “Handbook for Employers: Instructions for Completing Form I-9 (M-274).”

To comply with the law, U.S. employers must complete Form I-9, Employee Eligibility Verification to verify the identity and employment authorization for every worker they hire after November 6, 1986, regardless of the employee’s immigration status. In addition, federal contractors and employers in several U.S. states must also use E-Verify program, a free web-based employment eligibility verification system from the government that checks employee information on the Form I-9 against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA) databases.

A December 2010 report from the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) showed that the USCIS has taken steps to improve the accuracy and efficiency of E-Verify, which immediately confirmed the employment eligibility of nearly 97.5 percent of 8.2 million new hires entered in the system during fiscal year 2009.
