Background check expert Lester Rosen, an Attorney at Law and President of nationwide background screening provider Employment Screening Resources (ESR), will present an educational session at the 2011 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference and Exposition titled ‘Legal and Effective Reference Checking and Education Verification.’ The session will take place on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. “With hiring decisions becoming more critical in challenging economic times, verifying past employment and education and obtaining references has become very important,” says Rosen, author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ a guide for background checks.
Rosen will teach participants in the session how to effectively navigate roadblocks to verify the past employment and education accomplishments of job applicants and review legal techniques for the reference checking process. In addition, participants will learn:
- Why employment references create legal issues for employers.
- Strategies for dealing with verification requests.
- Why phony education credentials are problematic.
- How to spot fake degrees from “degree” mills.
A recent report from Europe’s leading background screening company revealed a 48 percent increase worldwide in the past year in the number of known fake diploma mills, which the report described as “largely online entities whose degrees are worthless due to the lack of valid accreditation and recognition.” Also in the report, the United States saw a 20 percent increase in known diploma mills with the number rising from 810 to 1,008.
“Unfortunately, falsifying or inflating employment and educational accomplishments has become a significant problem for employers,” adds Rosen, who founded ESR in 1997 in the San Francisco area to ensure safe workplaces for both employers and employees.
