Jared Callahan, a licensed Private Investigator and Director of Business Development for California-based nationwide background check firm Employment Screening Resources (ESR), will be the guest speaker for the Employer Resource Institute webinar titled ‘Background Checks in California: How to Legally Probe, Snoop, and Sniff Out Applicants Who Spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E’ on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Noon (Pacific). “If you don’t already run background checks, you should,” says Callahan, who works with employers to conduct background checks and teaches them about legal compliance efforts across the fifty U.S. states “It’s an opportunity to investigate whether applicants have lied, stolen, cheated, been violent, or otherwise engaged in unacceptable behavior. It’s also a way to defend against a negligent hiring claim in the event you hire someone with a clean slate who later takes a turn for the dark side.”
Fortunately for employers, Callahan says there are many tools they can legally use to conduct thorough background checks on job applicants. But they need to know the legal parameters within which they can “dig for dirt.” Also, it’s important for employers to know the procedures to follow once they decide they are not going to hire an applicant because of information uncovered to avoid being vulnerable to failure-to-hire bias claims.
Before joining Employment Screening Resources, a background check firm located in the San Francisco Bay area and accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), Callahan began his career in employment screening in 1996 with a private investigative firm and worked as an investigator in the special investigations unit of a large workers’ compensation insurance company. Along with ESR founder and CEO Attornety Les Rosen, Callahan speaks nationwide on safe hiring issues as part of the ‘ESR Speaks’ program at http://www.esrcheck.com/Newsletter/ESR-Speaks/.
