To help household employers perform due diligence screening on caregivers, ESR Screened Caregiver offers “real” background checks that do not rely on cheap online database searches containing inaccurate and incomplete information. Household employers may either obtain background screening reports for caregivers or view finished screening reports from caregivers. Caregivers may be sent by employers to get background checks or purchase background checks themselves to show employers.
The ESR Screened Caregiver website currently offers three background screening packages for both employers and caregivers:

- COMPREHENSIVE Caregiver Screening Services Package: Includes BASIC Package services plus Motor Vehicle Record and FACIS Level 3 – Fraud and Abuse Control Information System.
Since caregivers hired by household employers are employees subject to state and federal tax withholding and many household employers do not understand how to comply with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) obligations, ESR Screened Caregiver has partnered with leading national payroll service Paychex, Inc. to offer a total payroll solution for household employers. Paychex helps household employers with applications for federal and state employer identification numbers and filing Schedule H forms with their personal income tax returns.
The need for background screening services for caregivers is evident from a April 2011 report from the California Senate Office of Oversight and Outcomes – ‘Caregiver Roulette: California Fails To Screen Those Who Care for the Elderly at Home’ – which revealed that residents of the state may risk hiring private in-home caregivers with criminal records. The report suggests that the elderly population in California, one of six U.S. states that do not regulate private in-home caregivers, may suffer theft and abuse as a result of the lack of regulation.
