Attorney at Law and author Lester Rosen, a safe hiring expert and CEO of nationwide background check company Employment Screening Resources (ESR), will present a session titled ‘Web 2.0 Caution! Using Social Networking Sites and Search Engines to Screen Applicants’ at The Recruiting Conference 2011 Summit being held from November 1 to 3, 2011 at the Intercontinental Hotel Chicago O’Hare. For more information on this session, visit http://www.therecruitingconference.com/les-rosen#session.
Rosen – the author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ the first comprehensive guide to employment screening – says that while employers and recruiters “have discovered a treasure trove of information on potential job applicants by using social networking sites, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook, and search engines,” the unrestricted use of Web 2.0 “could well land an employer, human resources professional or recruiter in legal hot water. Just because information is online does not mean it is risk free or even true.”
In the session, Rosen will examine both the pros and cons of utilizing online tools for screening, including discrimination issues, legal off-duty conduct, privacy, accuracy, and authenticity. Through case studies, legal decisions, and by reviewing web sites, recruiters and HR professionals will see how these sites work, what they may find, and the potential legal landmines and practical risks involved. The session will also focus on:
- Strategies for getting information while minimizing potential complaints for discrimination or invasion of privacy.
- Learning why major employers, human resources, and recruiters use search engines and social network sites to screen candidates.
- What are the risks in using these sites?
- How to learn if everything on the web fair game since privacy is waived once someone places something on the Internet?
- How do discrimination laws and rules concerning off-duty conduct apply?
- Uncovering best practices for employers, job applicants, and college placement offices.
Rosen founded ESR in 1997 in the San Francisco, California area and the company is accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). He is also a frequent presenter nationwide on safe hiring issues as part of the ‘ESR Speaks’ program (http://www.esrcheck.com/Newsletter/ESR-Speaks/), and was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the NAPBS, a professional trade organization for the background screening industry with over 500 members, and served as the first co-chairman.
To provide an informative introduction to the risks employers and recruiters face using Internet search engines and social network sites for recruitment and screening, Rosen has also co-written a white paper titled ‘Managing the Risks of Using the Internet for Employment Screening Background Checks’ that offers solutions to avoid legal issues dealing with discrimination, privacy, accuracy, and legal off-duty conduct. The complimentary white paper from ESR is available for download at: http://www.esrcheck.com/Download/.

About Employment Screening Resources (ESR):
Founded in 1997 in the San Francisco, CA area, Employment Screening Resources (ESR) literally wrote the book on background screening with “The Safe Hiring Manual” by ESR Founder and CEO Lester Rosen. ESR streamlines the screening process and reduces administrative overhead though its proprietary technology solutions. ESR is accredited by The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS®), a distinction held by less than two percent of all screening firms. This important recognition was achieved by successfully passing a third party audit demonstrating compliance with the NAPBS Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program. By choosing an accredited screening firm like ESR, employers know they have selected an agency that meets the highest industry standards.
