According to the latest Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®) National Employment Report® released today, employment in the private sector – led by the services sector and small to medium-sized businesses – increased by 110,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011, while the estimated advance in employment from August 2011 to September 2011 was revised up to 116,000 jobs from the initially reported 91,000 jobs.
The ADP National Employment Report – sponsored by leading U.S. payroll service provider ADP and maintained by economic consulting firm Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC – is derived from actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month. The ADP report differs from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) ‘Employment Situation’ report to be released Friday since it counts only private sector jobs while the BLS report includes government workers.
Highlights from the October 2011 ADP National Employment Report include:
- Total employment increased by 110,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011.
- Small businesses (payrolls with 1-49 employees) increased by 58,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011.
- Medium businesses (payrolls with 50-499 employees) increased by 53,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011.
- Large businesses (payrolls with more than 499 employees) decreased by 1,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011.
- Service-providing sector increased by 114,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011.
- Goods-producing sector decreased by 4,000 jobs from September 2011 to October 2011.
