The Oregon House recently passed legislation, House Bill 4091 (HB 4091), aimed at removing redundancies, inconsistencies, and holes in Oregon’s systems of criminal background checks and the bill now moves to the Oregon Senate for consideration, according to a news release from the House Democratic Caucus. If passed, HB 4091 would make criminal background checks easier and less costly to track and maintain for volunteers and employees in human service and education positions and would also attempt to make background checks more usable across agencies.
The bill’s chief sponsor, Rep. Nancy Nathanson (D-Eugene), stated in the press release that Oregon currently has “a tangled web of background check processes” and that HB 4091 would “untangle some of the knots in the system.” She also said the current criminal background check systems added an unnecessary burden for staff and volunteers at schools and nonprofit organizations and HB 4091 would make Oregon’s government leaner and more efficient to best serve the citizens who rely on these services.
HB 4091 addresses redundant processes and requirements and clearance incompatibilities between state agencies in an effort to provide a unified and efficient criminal background checks system in Oregon.
