Private sector employment in the United States increased by 209,000 jobs from February 2012 to March 2012, with the private service providing sector adding 164,000 jobs and the private goods producing sector rising by 45,000 jobs during the month, according to the March 2012 ADP National Employment Report® from Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®). The report, which marks the twenty-sixth consecutive monthly gain in private employment as measured by ADP, is available at: http://www.adpemploymentreport.com/pdf/FINAL_Report_March_12.pdf.

Estimated gains for previous months were revised higher in the March 2012 ADP Report, as gains from December 2011 to January 2012 were revised up by 9,000 to 182,000 jobs and gains from January 2012 to February 2012 were revised up by 14,000 to 230,000 jobs. Other U.S. private employment highlights from the March 2012 Report include:

  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 87,000 jobs from February 2012 to March 2012.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with more than 499 employees added 22,000 jobs from February 2012 to March 2012.

Of the 100,000 jobs created in private small business employment, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – found that 83,000 small business jobs were created in the service providing sector while 17,000 small business jobs were created in the goods producing sector. The ADP Small Business Report is available at http://www.smallbusinessreport.adp.com/.

Created by ADP in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, the ADP National Employment Report is derived from actual payroll data from an anonymous subset of roughly 500,000 U.S. business clients and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month. The April 2012 ADP National Employment Report will be released May 2, 2012.
