October 2012 ADP National Employment Report Shows Increase of 158000 Private Sector Jobs in US

Private sector employment in the U.S. increased by 158,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012 led by a gain of 81,000 jobs in large businesses with 500 or more employees, according to the October 2012 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®). “Today marks the first ADP National Employment Report with Moody’s Analytics as our partner,” ADP president and chief executive officer Carlos A. Rodriguez stated in a press release. “Our new format leverages ADP’s unique client data in a more robust way to provide greater insights on employment in the United States.”

The October 2012 ADP National Employment Report found that of the 158,000 jobs gained during the month, 144,000 jobs were added in the service producing sector and 14,000 jobs were added in the goods producing sector. Broken down by a selection of specific industries, the report revealed:

  • Professional/business services gained 35,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012.
  • Trade/transportation/utilities gained 24,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012.
  • Construction gained 23,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012.
  • Financial activities gained 9,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012.
  • Manufacturing lost 8,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012.

Broken down by company size, the October 2012 ADP National Employment Report found:

  • Large businesses representing payrolls with more than 499 employees added 81,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012. Large businesses with more than 1,000 employees gained 69,000 jobs while those with 500-999 employees gained 12,000 jobs.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 27,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012.
  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 50,000 jobs from September 2012 to October 2012. Small businesses with 20 to 49 employees gained 32,000 jobs while those with 1 to 19 employees gained 18,000 jobs.

Of the 50,000 jobs created in private small business employment from September 2012 to October 2012, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – revealed that the service providing sector added 43,000 jobs while the goods producing sector gained 7,000 jobs. Beginning with the October 2012 report, the ADP National Employment Report uses new methodology that includes a larger sample size of 406,000 ADP clients and a larger population of 23 million employees, which accounts for more than 20 percent of all U.S. private sector employees.
