Eight Shocking Facts about Hiring and Employment Screening Revealed in Webinar

Attorney Lester Rosen, founder and CEO of background check firm Employment Screening Resources (ESR) and author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ recently presented a best hiring practices webinar titled “Eight Shocking Facts about Hiring and Employment Screening,” for leading Payroll and HR solutions provider Paycor that revealed surprising information. For more information about the webinar, visit http://www.paycor.com/resource-center/8-shocking-facts-about-hiring-employment-screening.

According to Rosen, there are several pitfalls employers should try to avoid when hiring that range from fake diplomas to discrimination lawsuits. The webinar lists the following eight shocking facts about hiring and employment screening:

  • Shocking Fact #1: Forty percent of resumes contain material lies or omissions about past jobs, education, or qualifications.
  • Shocking Fact #2: Scientific evidence shows that if applicants are dishonest in getting the job, they are likely to be dishonest while on the job.
  • Shocking Fact #3: Turnover costs for bad employees can be as much as two to three times their salary.
  • Shocking Fact #4: There is no “national” database available for private employers to check criminal records or false credentials.
  • Shocking Fact #5: The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) forbids employers from automatically disqualifying an applicant who has a criminal record unless they can prove they have a “business justification.”
  • Shocking Fact #6: Using social media background checks on websites such as Facebook to screen job applicants – while tempting – could potentially lead to discrimination allegations against employers.
  • Shocking Fact #7: Job applicants can go to websites offering personalized Job Reference Services and – for a fee – purchase a career history complete with employer references and fake company websites.
  • Shocking Fact #8: Thanks to “diploma mills” that make fake degrees from phony universities available for purchase, all job applicants need these days to get proof of a college education is a printer and a credit card.

Employment screening can protect employers from bad hires and employment lawsuits. To listen to a full recording of the webinar, click here: “Eight Shocking Facts about Hiring and Employment Screening.”
