Job seekers in the St. Louis, Missouri area say they have been scammed by thieves claiming to represent a company performing biohazard cleanup work, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns. All victims claimed the thieves cut off communications after collecting the $89 fee job seekers paid for a supposed pre-employment criminal background check using prepaid cash cards. The BBB urges job seekers to be “extremely skeptical of any business demanding upfront payments via prepaid cash cards or electronic wire transfer systems like Western Union or MoneyGram.” In the St. Louis cases, the victims were instructed to load $89 onto a Green Dot MoneyPak card to pay for a pre-employment criminal background check. After the thieves emptied the money from the card for the background check, they stopped communications. The BBB also offers the following tips to job seekers:
- Beware of unfamiliar companies making contact through online job boards. Some of these so-called businesses may be set up to scam job seekers.
- Be cautious about paying any fees upfront for pre-employment background checks or drug tests.
- If at all possible, visit the company’s office to determine that they are located where they say they are.
- Get references for the company and contact them.
