April 2013 ADP National Employment Report Shows Increase of 119000 Jobs

Private sector employment in the U.S. increased by 119,000 jobs from March 2013 to April 2013 on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the April 2013 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®) in collaboration with Moody’s Analytics. “During the month of April 2013, U.S. private sector employment increased by 119,000 jobs, representing the slowest pace of expansion since September 2012,” ADP President and Chief Executive Officer Carlos A. Rodriguez stated in a press release about the report.

The ADP report includes a breakdown of job growth by company size from March 2013 to April 2013:

  • Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 43,000 jobs. Large businesses with more than 1,000 employees gained 35,000 jobs while those with 500 to 999 employees gained 8,000 jobs.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 26,000 jobs.
  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 50,000 jobs. Small businesses with 20 to 49 employees gained 17,000 jobs while those with 1 to 19 employees gained 34,000 jobs.

The ADP report also includes a breakdown of job growth by sector from March 2013 to April 2013:

  • Service providing sector added 113,000 jobs.
  • Goods producing sector added 6,000 jobs.

In addition, the ADP report includes a breakdown of job growth by specific industries from March 2013 to April 2013:

  • Trade/transportation/utilities added 29,000 jobs.
  • Professional/business services added 20,000 jobs.
  • Construction added 15,000 jobs.
  • Financial activities added 7,000 jobs.
  • Manufacturing lost 10,000 jobs.

Of the 50,000 jobs created in private small business employment from March 2013 to April 2013, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – estimated that the service providing sector added 41,000 small business jobs while the goods producing sector gained 9,000 small business jobs.
