April 2013 Employment Situation Report from Bureau of Labor Statistics Shows 165000 Jobs Added

Total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States rose by 165,000 jobs in April 2013 while the unemployment rate dipped to 7.5 percent and the number of unemployed persons remained at 11.7 million, according to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — APRIL 2013’ report released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The April 2013 Employment Situation Report also revised the change in total nonfarm employment for February 2013 from 268,000 jobs added up to 332,000 jobs added while the change for March 2013 was revised from 88,000 jobs added up to 138,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in February 2013 and March 2013 combined were 114,000 jobs higher than previously reported.

Employment increased in professional and business services, food services and drinking places, retail trade, and health care during April 2013. Over the prior 12 months, employment growth averaged 169,000 jobs per month. Among specific sectors, the April 2013 Employment Situation Report found:

  • Professional and business services employment added 73,000 jobs in April 2013 and has added 587,000 jobs over the past year. In April 2013, temporary help services gained 31,000 jobs while professional and technical services gained 23,000 jobs.
  • Leisure and hospitality employment in food services and drinking places rose by 38,000 jobs over the month. Job growth in the food services industry averaged 25,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months.
  • Retail trade employment increased by 29,000 jobs in April 2013, with general merchandise stores adding 15,000 jobs and health and personal care stores adding 5,000 jobs. The industry added an average of 21,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months.
  • Health care employment added 19,000 jobs in April 2013, with ambulatory health care services gaining 14,000 jobs. Over the prior 12 months, job growth in health care averaged 24,000 jobs per month.
  • Construction employment changed little in April 2013. Construction gained an average of 27,000 jobs per month over the prior 6 months. Manufacturing employment was unchanged over the month.
  • Employment in other major industries, including mining and logging, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, financial activities, and government, showed little change in April 2013.
