Private sector employment in the U.S. increased by 188,000 jobs from May 2013 to June 2013 on a seasonally adjusted basis with small businesses leading the way by adding of 84,000 jobs, according to the June 2013 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. “During the month of June, the U.S. private sector added 188,000 jobs, driven by gains across all sizes of businesses, and with small companies showing the largest overall monthly increase,” ADP President and CEO Carlos A. The June 2013 ADP Employment Report, which also revised the estimated gain from April 2013 to May 2013 down slightly from 135,000 jobs to 134,000 jobs, includes a breakdown of job growth by company size from May 2013 to June 2013. The sum of components may not equal total due to rounding:
- Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 84,000 jobs. Small businesses with 20 to 49 employees gained 31,000 jobs while those with 1 to 19 employees gained 54,000 jobs.
- Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 55,000 jobs.
- Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 49,000 jobs. Large businesses with more than 1,000 employees gained 37,000 jobs while those with 500 to 999 employees gained 12,000 jobs.
The ADP report also included a breakdown of job growth by sector from May 2013 to June 2013:
- Service providing sector added 161,000 jobs.
- Goods producing sector added 27,000 jobs.
In addition, the report included a breakdown of job growth by industries from May 2013 to June 2013:
- Trade/transportation/utilities added 43,000 jobs.
- Professional/business services added 40,000 jobs.
- Construction added 21,000 jobs.
- Financial activities added 13,000 jobs.
- Manufacturing lost 1,000 jobs.
Of the 84,000 jobs created in private small business employment from May 2013 to June 2013, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – estimated that the service providing sector added approximately 70,000 small business jobs while the goods producing sector gained 14,000 small business jobs.
