July 2013 ADP National Employment Report Shows 200000 Private Sector Jobs Added during Month

Private sector employment in the United States increased by 200,000 jobs from June 2013 to July 2013 on a seasonally adjusted basis with small businesses leading the way by adding of 82,000 jobs, according to the July 2013 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. “The U.S. private sector added a total of 200,000 jobs during the month of July, with businesses of all sizes contributing to the overall gain and small businesses generating the greatest share, just as they did in the previous month. Among industries tracked by the ADP National Employment Report, professional/business services showed the largest increase in July with the addition of 49,000 jobs,” ADP President and CEO Carlos A. The July 2013 ADP Employment Report, which also revised the estimated gain from May 2013 to June 2013 upward from 188,000 jobs to 198,000 jobs, includes a breakdown of job growth by company size from June 2013 to July 2013 (NOTE: Sum of components may not equal total due to rounding):

  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 82,000 jobs. Small businesses with 20 to 49 employees gained 31,000 jobs while those with 1 to 19 employees gained 51,000 jobs.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 60,000 jobs.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 57,000 jobs. Large businesses with more than 1,000 employees gained 50,000 jobs while those with 500 to 999 employees gained 7,000 jobs.

The ADP report also included a breakdown of job growth by sector from June 2013 to July 2013:

  • Service providing sector added 177,000 jobs.
  • Goods producing sector added 22,000 jobs.

In addition, the report included a breakdown of job growth by industries from June 2013 to July 2013:

  • Professional/business services added 49,000 jobs.
  • Trade/transportation/utilities added 45,000 jobs.
  • Construction added 22,000 jobs.
  • Financial activities added 4,000 jobs.
  • Manufacturing lost 5,000 jobs.

Of the 82,000 jobs created in private small business employment from June 2013 to July 2013, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – estimated that the service providing sector added approximately 67,000 small business jobs while the goods producing sector gained 16,000 small business jobs.
