Private sector employment in the United States increased by 166,000 jobs from August 2013 to September 2013 on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the September 2013 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®) in collaboration with Moody’s Analytics. “During the month of September, the U.S. private sector added a total of 166,000 jobs. As in previous months, most of the job gains occurred in the service-providing sector,” ADP president and chief executive officer Carlos A. The ADP report – which also revised the estimated gain from August 2013 down slightly from 176,000 jobs to 159,000 jobs – includes a breakdown of job growth by company size in September 2013 (NOTE: Sum of components in the report may not equal total due to rounding.):
- Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 74,000 jobs.
- Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 28,000 jobs.
- Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 64,000 jobs.
The ADP report also has a breakdown of job growth by sector in September 2013:
- Service providing sector added 147,000 jobs.
- Goods producing sector added 19,000 jobs.
In addition, the report includes a snapshot of job growth by industries in September 2013:
- Trade/transportation/utilities added 54,000 jobs.
- Professional/business services added 27,000 jobs.
- Construction added 16,000 jobs.
- Manufacturing added 1,000 jobs.
- Financial activities lost 4,000 jobs.
Of the 74,000 jobs created in private small business employment in September 2013, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – estimated that the service providing sector added approximately 69,000 small business jobs while the goods producing sector gained 6,000 small business jobs.
