The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will expand the background screening of U.S. airplane passengers long before they arrive at the airport for their flights by searching government and private databases that may include a wide variety of records such as employment information, according to a New York Times report available online at http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/22/business/security-check-now-starts-long-before-you-fly.html.
The Times reports the expanded pre-screening measures give the government “greater authority to use travelers’ data for domestic airport screenings” to a level previously only applied to individuals entering the United States. While the TSA’s goal is “to streamline the security procedures for millions of passengers who pose no risk,” details of the program – some of which is already in place – have not been publicly announced, the Times reports.
According to The Times, the new background screening measures go beyond the ‘Secure Flight’ check the government conducted for years that compared passenger names, genders, and dates of birth with terrorist watch lists. New search measures will include passport numbers and records that may include tax identification numbers, car registrations, property records, travel itineraries, and law enforcement information, The Times Reports.
