October 2013 ADP National Employment Report Shows 130000 Jobs Added

Private sector employment in the United States increased by 130,000 jobs from August 2013 to October 2013 led by a gain of 81,000 jobs in large businesses, according to the October 2013 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. “According to ADP National Employment Report findings, the U.S. private sector added a total of 130,000 jobs during the month of October, well below the average of the last twelve months. Small business growth was down from the previous month, while payrolls among large enterprises showed an increase,” ADP president and chief executive officer Carlos A. The October 2013 ADP National Employment Report – which also revised the estimated gain from September 2013 down from 166,000 jobs to 145,000 jobs – includes a breakdown of job growth by company size (NOTE: Sum of components in the report may not equal total due to rounding.):

  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 37,000 jobs.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 13,000 jobs.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 81,000 jobs.

The ADP report also has a breakdown of job growth by sector in October 2013:

  • Service providing sector added 107,000 jobs.
  • Goods producing sector added 24,000 jobs.

In addition, the report includes a snapshot of job growth by industries in October 2013:

  • Trade/transportation/utilities added 40,000 jobs.
  • Professional/business services added 20,000 jobs.
  • Construction added 14,000 jobs.
  • Manufacturing added 5,000 jobs.
  • Financial activities lost 5,000 jobs.

Of the 37,000 jobs created in private small business employment in October 2013, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – estimated that the service providing sector added approximately 26,000 small business jobs while the goods producing sector gained 10,000 small business jobs.
