Legal and Effective Reference Checking and Education Verification Taught in Live Online Session March 4

Written By Thomas Ahearn

Verifying past employment and education and obtaining references has become critical when hiring in challenging economic times.  Attorney Lester Rosen, Founder and CEO of Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), will teach a live 90 minute online training session for TrainHR titled ‘Legal and Effective Reference Checking and Education Verification’ on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 starting at 11:00 AM PST/2:00 PM EST. For more information, visit

“Unfortunately, falsifying or inflating employment and educational accomplishments has become a significant problem for employers,” says Rosen, author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual.’ “It is easy to obtain a phony degree from a real school or worthless diplomas from degree mills. There are even web sites that will assist in creating a fake job history that appear very authentic. Legal limitations also create barriers for human resources professional when obtaining and giving past employment information.”

This workshop reviews legal and effective techniques for the reference checking processes including how to verify education and spot worthless degrees and phony employment credentials. Rosen will cover the legal landscape for past employment references and an employer’s potential liability when information is provided or not. This program is approved for 1.5 General recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute (HRCI).

Other topics include best practices when asking for past employment information, helpful insights for obtaining past employment information, and special issues such as verification of current employment, what to do if the past employer no longer exists, military employment, and dealing with employment databases. New technologies will also be reviewed, as well as special issues involving international credentials and the role of social media sites and Web 2.0 in the process. Other areas covered include:

  • Learning effective and legal strategies to verify an applicant’s past employment and education accomplishments.
  • Exploring why employment references create legal issues for employers and strategies for obtaining information and dealing with requests from other employers.
  • Learning why phony education credentials are problematic and how to spot degree mills.
  • Reviewing new technologies and approaches to credentials verifications.
  • Understanding special issues when it comes to social media sites and employment and education verification.
