The Louisville (KY) Metro Council has voted in favor of a new “Ban the Box” law removing the question about criminal records from job applications for the city and many of its vendors, according to a press release from the National Employment Law Project (NELP). This follows similar Ban the Box legislation in Baltimore, MD, Charlotte, NC, Indianapolis, IN, and San Francisco, CA that give qualified job applicants with past convictions a fair chance at employment opportunities. According to NELP, Ban the Box ordinances do not ban background checks but tell employers to postpone them until later in the hiring process so job applicants can be reviewed on their qualifications first. Ban the Box legislation “seeks to mitigate the stigma of a conviction that makes it so difficult even for highly qualified job-seekers to be fairly considered for work.” A Ban the Box Resource Guide from NELP reports the movement is growing with nearly 60 cities and counties and ten states having joined.
