To help California HR professionals understand that background checks performed in the Golden State have different rules than the rest of the country, Attorney Lester Rosen, Founder and CEO of Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), will present a session titled ‘Only in California: Using Background Checks to Hire the Best and Stay Out of Court’ at the 2014 San Francisco HR Star Conference on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. “Background screening is done much differently in California than in the other 49 states,” says Rosen, the author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual’ and a noted background check expert who is a frequent HR Star Conference speaker. “While California employers always need to follow the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, there are additional California rules and requirements when it comes to background checks.”
In this session, Rosen will teach San Francisco HR Star Conference attendees about critical “California only” requirements including:
- How California laws regarding due diligence and background checks are unique and different from the rest of the United States.
- Key areas where businesses that hire or employ in California face significant exposure for damages.
- How to audit current practices in California for legal compliance.
“Given the large risk with just one bad hire, California employers cannot simply opt out of these complexities by not doing background checks,” Rosen says. “The bottom line is that employers must exercise due diligence and follow all complex requirements for California.”
Rosen founded San Francisco, CA area-based Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) in 1997 and the company is accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). He was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the NAPBS, “The Voice of Screening Professionals,” and served as first co-chair.
