Atlanta City Council Passes Ban the Box Ordinance

The Atlanta City Council has passed a Ban the Box ordinance – named for the box on applications that applicants check if they have criminal records – to eliminate discrimination against City of Atlanta job applicants who are ex-offenders. AtlantaDailyWorld.com reports while applicants are not required to reveal criminal histories on current City of Atlanta job applications, the Ban the Box legislation “officially makes it city policy except when state and/or federal laws require criminal background investigations for certain positions, including positions that involve work with children, positions in law enforcement, and other sensitive positions.”

Sponsored by Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall, the Atlanta Ban the Box Ordinance was developed as part of “a national movement with the goal of increasing employment opportunities for individuals with prior criminal convictions by removing the question regarding prior criminal history from employment applications,” AtlantaDailyWorld.com reports.

The Ban the Box movement is rapidly spreading across the United States. According to a Ban the Box Guide from the National Employment Law Project (NELP), nearly 70 U.S. cities and counties as well as 13 states have passed Ban the Box legislation.
