California Courts and judicial branch offices will be closed Thursday, December 25, 2014 in observance of the Christmas Day holiday. For a schedule of court holidays on which the California courts will be closed, please visit http://www.courts.ca.gov/holidays.htm.

Christmas Day is the last court holiday of 2014. The California courts and judicial branch offices will be closed in observance of the following holidays in 2015:

  • New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1, 2015
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 19, 2015
  • Lincoln’s Birthday – Thursday, February 12, 2015
  • Washington’s Birthday Monday, February 16, 2015
  • César Chávez Day – Tuesday, March 31, 2015
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 25, 2015
  • Independence Day – Friday, July 3, 2015
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 7, 2015
  • Columbus Day – Monday, October 12, 2015
  • Veterans Day – Wednesday, November 11, 2015
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26, 2015
  • Day after Thanksgiving – Friday, November 27, 2015
  • Christmas Day – Friday, December 25, 2015

According to the report ‘Federal Holidays: Evolution and Current Practices’ from the Congressional Research Service (CRS), the first four congressionally designated federal holidays were created in 1870 when Congress granted paid time off to federal workers in the District of Columbia for New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
