Background Checks Should Not Be One Size Fits All

News about Background Checks

Background checks of drivers using ride-sharing technology from Uber that came under scrutiny after the alleged rape of a woman in Boston by an Uber driver should not be “one size fits all,” according to a background check expert quoted in the article ‘Who’s really taking you for an Uber ride?’ by CNET at http://www.cnet.com/news/whos-really-taking-you-for-an-uber-ride/.

“Background checks need to be a lot more detailed than just checking a database. You need to check every place where a person has lived, worked and studied,” said Lester Rosen, Founder and CEO of San Francisco-area nationwide background check firm Employment Screening Resources (ESR) and author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual.’ “It’s not one size fits all.”

In the CNET article, Rosen said background checks can be complicated and imperfect so they are just one way to lower risk. “There’s not any way to foolproof background checks,” Rosen said. “There are incidents with repair people who go into people’s homes. There are teachers who molest. No matter how much you do, at some point there’s going to be some risk.”

Rosen told CNET that background checks may not find alleged perpetrators with clean records or may also fail to spot criminal activity or that basic online screenings are less than adequate. “At the end of the day, there’s not going to be demand for a service that people don’t perceive as safe,” Rosen explained to CNET. “Safety is not where you take short-cuts.”

Rosen also told CNET that other possible types of background checks include training, in-person meetings and interviews, psychological and honesty tests, past employment checks, and supervision. Rosen believes the ride-sharing community should put time and money into establishing a standardized protocol for safe driver screening, CNET reports.

This trend of background checks in the new “sharing economy” not being limited to traditional employer-employee situations is one of the ‘ESR Top Ten Background Check Trends for 2015’ as selected by Rosen.
