Advocates, civil rights leaders, clergy, and impacted individuals will hold a demonstration at the White House in Washington D.C. on Thursday, July 30, 2015, to call on President Barack Obama to issue an executive order to “Ban the Box” and implement fair hiring practices for federal jobs, according to a press release from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

President Obama endorsed the Ban the Box policy at the NAACP National Convention in July when he said “let’s follow the growing number of our states, and cities, and private companies who’ve decided to ban the box on job applications so that former prisoners who have done their time and are now trying to get straight with society have a decent shot in a job interview.”

The Ban the Box movement aims to persuade employers to remove the check box that asks if applicants have a criminal record from job applications. According to research from the National Employment Law Project (NELP), more than 100 cities and counties as well as 18 states have adopted some form of Ban the Box policy. Washington D.C. passed a Ban the Box law in 2014.

Organizations participating in the Ban the Box demonstration will include The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, All of Us or None, the National Employment Law Project, ACLU, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, the PICO National Network, and the Center for Community Change. Participants in the Ban the Box demonstration can RSVP here.

The Ban the Box demonstration will take place in front of the White House at Lafayette Square, 16th & Pennsylvania Ave. NW, in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, July 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The press release from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is available at http://www.civilrights.org/press/2015/ban-box-demonstration-advisory.html.
