The E-Verify employment eligibility verification system due to expire at the end of the fiscal year on September 30, 2015 was extended to December 11, 2015 within hours of the deadline as part of a continuing resolution that funded the federal budget short term to avoid a government shutdown, according to a report from The Daily Signal.

The Daily Signal reports: The continuing resolution funds the government at a rate of $1.017 trillion annually for the next two and a half months… The continuing resolution also provides $74.7 billion for Overseas Contingency Operations and reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration, E-verify program, and Internet Tax Freedom Act.

As reported by ESR News two years ago, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) informed employers that the federal E-Verify system would be unavailable and that they would not be able to access their E-Verify accounts due to a federal government shutdown that began on October 1, 2013. E-Verify resumed operations following the end of the shutdown later that month.

E-Verify is a free Web-based system that compares information entered on the ‘Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9’ of a newly hired employee with data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA) to determine if that employee is legally eligible to work in the United States as required by law.

According to the USCIS – the federal government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States – E-Verify is used nationwide by more than 600,000 employers at over 1.9 million hiring sites. E-Verify is joined by approximately 1,400 new participating companies every week. For more information about E-Verify, please visit http://www.uscis.gov/e-verify.
