Major Corporations Sign White House Pledge to Ban the Box

Fair Chance Business Pledge

Written By ESR News Blog Editor Thomas Ahearn

Several major American corporations including Coca-Cola, Facebook, and Starbucks have joined President Barack Obama as the founding members in signing the Fair Chance Business Pledge that asks all of the U.S. private sector to Ban the Box on employment applications in order to eliminate barriers to job seekers with a criminal record, according to a White House Fact Sheet.

Companies that signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge to Ban the Box include: American Airlines, Busboys and Poets, The Coca-Cola Company, Facebook, Georgia Pacific, Google, Greyston Bakery, The Hershey Company, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, Koch Industries, Libra Group, PepsiCo, Prudential, Starbucks, Uber, Under Amour/Plank Industries, Unilever, and Xerox.

The White House Fact Sheet estimates that approximately 70 million Americans have a criminal record – almost one in three Americans of working age – and the United States accounts for 25 percent of the world’s inmates. Roughly 2.2 million Americans are in jail and more than 600,000 inmates are released from federal and state prisons each year while another 11.4 million individuals cycle through local jails.

As reported earlier on ESR News in November 2015, President Obama announced an Executive Order to Ban the Box since “advancing policies and programs that enable these men and women to put their lives back on track promotes not only justice and fairness, but also public safety.” To sign the Fair Chance Business Pledge, visit https://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/criminal-justice/business-pledge.
