To help reformed ex-offenders contribute to their communities upon release from prison, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) designated the week of April 24-30, 2016, as National Reentry Week and asked the Bureau of Prisons to coordinate reentry events such as job fairs, practice interviews, and mentorship programs at their facilities across the country.
“Supporting successful reentry is an essential part of the Justice Department’s mission to promote public safety — because by helping individuals return to productive, law-abiding lives, we can reduce crime across the country and make our neighborhoods better places to live,” Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said in a National Reentry Week Announcement.
The DOJ took major steps to make the criminal justice system more fair, efficient, and effective at reducing recidivism and helping ex-offender contribute to their communities. During National Reentry Week, the DOJ participated in hundreds of reentry activities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands that included:
- Over 75 resource fairs.
- Over 65 employment-related events.
- Over 75 reentry presentations.
- Over 35 family-related events.
- Over 30 stakeholder meetings.
- Over 25 graduation ceremonies.
- Over 25 reentry simulations.
According to the DOJ, more than 600,000 individuals deal with reentry into society each year after serving time in federal and state prisons. Another 11.4 million individuals cycle through local jails. Nearly a quarter of Americans have encountered the criminal justice system mostly for relatively minor, non-violent offenses that are sometimes decades old.
However, ex-offender “face serious and complex obstacles” to successful reentry since the long-term impact of a criminal record prevents many motivated ex-offenders from obtaining employment, housing, education, and credit.
