August Employment Situation Report Shows 151,000 Jobs Added in Month

The U.S. economy added 151,000 jobs in August 2016 while both the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons remained unchanged at 4.9 percent and 7.8 million respectively, according to the Employment Situation Report for August 2016 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The BLS jobs report for August 2016 revealed that job gains occurred in the following industries:

  • Food Services and Drinking Places employment added 34,000 jobs.
  • Social Assistance employment added 22,000 jobs.
  • Professional and Technical Services employment added 20,000 jobs.
  • Financial Activities employment added 15,000 jobs.
  • Health Care employment added 14,000 jobs.

On the negative side, mining employment continued to trend down in August with 4,000 jobs lost. Employment in other major industries such as construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, temporary help services, and government showed little or no change during the month.

The change in employment for June 2016 was revised from 292,000 jobs added to 271,000 jobs added while the change for July 2016 was revised from 255,000 jobs added to 275,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in June and July combined were 1,000 less than previously reported.

The ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION’ is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The Employment Situation for September 2016 is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2016. Until then, the current jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm.
