U.S. Economy Adds 156,000 Jobs in September 2016

The U.S. economy added 156,000 jobs in September 2016 while the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons rose slightly to 5.0 percent and 7.9 million respectively in the month, according to the Employment Situation report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobs report for September 2016 revealed that job growth has averaged 178,000 per month so far this year, compared with an average of 229,000 jobs per month in 2015. In September 2016, job gains occurred mostly in professional and business services, health care, and food services:

  • Professional and business services employment added 67,000 jobs.
  • Health Care employment added 33,000 jobs.
  • Food services and drinking places employment added 30,000 jobs.
  • Retail trade employment added 22,000 jobs.

The jobs report for September 2016 also showed that employment in other major industries such as mining, construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and government, changed little over the month.

The change in employment for July 2016 was revised from 275,000 jobs added to 252,000 jobs added while August 2016 was revised from 151,000 jobs added to 167,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in June and July were 7,000 less than previously reported.

The Employment Situation report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The Employment Situation for October 2016 is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016. Until then, the current jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm.
