The Professional Association of Sonoma County (PASCO) is sponsoring a live webinar entitled ‘Negligent Hiring and Background Checks in California – Best Practices and Legal Compliance’ presented by noted background check expert Attorney Lester Rosen, founder and CEO of Employment Screening Resources® (ESR). To register for this webinar, which is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, March 17, 2017, please visit the PASCO website at http://pascohr.org/event-expresso-events-list/.

In this 90 minute webinar, Rosen – author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual’ – will show how one bad hire can result in a legal and financial nightmare. “Without taking appropriate steps with background checks, there is a near statistical certainty that an employer will hire someone with an unsuitable criminal record or falsified background that can result in workplace violence, negligent hiring lawsuits, and time wasted recruiting and hiring the wrong person,” explains Rosen, a former Deputy District Attorney and criminal defense lawyer.

Rosen will also show how California employers need to be concerned about legal compliance due to a host of “Only in California” laws in addition to federal requirements for background checks. The webinar will explore how to obtain and utilize criminal records and past employment and education credentials on job applicants. Attendees will receive updates on recent legal developments, hear case studies that demonstrate what steps employers should take to avoid mistakes, and learn about cutting-edge issues such as:

  • The use of social media background checks and new Human Resources technology.
  • “Ban the Box” laws that help applicants with criminal records have a fair chance at employment.
  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) approach to the use of criminal records.
  • How to avoid class action lawsuits under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
  • Why “California is Different” when it comes to safe hiring and due diligence.

With the hiring landscape more complex than ever, attendees of ‘Negligent Hiring and Background Checks in California – Best Practices and Legal Compliance’ will learn legally compliant best practices to keep their businesses productive and out of court.  The webinar costs $30 for Members, $45 for Non-Members, and is free for Students. The webinar is also worth 1.5 HR Certification Institute (HRCI) and Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) General Recertification Credits.
