The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (UCSIS) is helping employers using E-Verify for more than 10 years by issuing “Instructions to Download Historic Records Reports in E-Verify” to retain case information by downloading the new Historic Records Reports containing E-Verify cases dated on or before December 31, 2006, that will be purged after March 31, 2017.
In April of 2017, the USCIS must dispose of E-Verify transaction records that are over 10 years old in accordance with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) records retention and disposal schedule (N 1-566-08-7) to minimize security and privacy risks associated with U.S. government retention of personally identifiable information (PII) of employees.
E-Verify recommends that employers write the E-Verify case verification number on the corresponding Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification and retain the Historic Records Report with corresponding Form I-9. U.S. law requires companies to employ only individuals who may legally work in the United States.
