U.S. Economy Adds 164,000 Jobs and Unemployment Rate Falls to 3.9 Percent in April 2018

The United States economy added 164,000 jobs in April 2018 while the unemployment rate edged down to 3.9 percent during the month, according to the Employment Situation report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The jobs report for April 2018 revealed that the number of unemployed persons decreased to 6.3 million while job gains occurred in professional and business services, manufacturing, health care, and mining. Here is a breakdown from the jobs report:

  • Professional and business services employment increased by 54,000 jobs in April 2018 and has risen by 518,000 jobs over past 12 months.
  • Manufacturing employment added 24,000 jobs in April 2018 and has risen by 245,000 jobs over the past year.
  • Health care employment increased by 24,000 jobs in April 2018 and has added 305,000 jobs over the past year.
  • Mining employment rose by 8,000 jobs in April 2018 and has added 86,000 jobs since a recent low in October 2016.

Employment in other major industries including construction, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and government showed little change over the month, according to the jobs report.

The change in employment for February 2018 was revised from 326,000 jobs added to 324,000 jobs added while March 2018 was revised from 103,000 jobs added to 135,000 jobs added. With the revisions, employment gains in these two months were 30,000 jobs more than previously reported.

The Employment Situation report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The Employment Situation report for May 2018 is scheduled to be released on June 1, 2018. Until then, the most recent Employment Situation is available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
