Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) will co-sponsor a complimentary webinar entitled “Managing Form I-9 Compliance in an Era of Enhanced Workforce Enforcement” presented by Human Resources (HR) technology provider EMP Trust HR on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time (11:00 AM Pacific Time).

The webinar on managing Form I-9 compliance will feature speaker and author Gloria Aitken, an analyst with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Ms. Aitken joined USCIS as a Management and Program Analyst in 2004 and holds a degree in Journalism from George Washington University.

In the webinar, Ms. Aitken will share information on common Form I-9 mistakes, tips, and tricks. In addition to a general overview of the Form I-9 and E-Verify process, and also will provide additional insight and guidance for users who want to know more about specialized topics including:

  • Reverification of employment authorization (rehires, etc.).
  • What to do when an employee’s employment authorization expires.
  • What to do when an Employment Authorization Document (I-766) expires.
  • Electronic signatures on the Form I-9.
  • Leaves of absence and layoffs.
  • Making corrections to the Form I-9.
  • Accepting receipts (TPS, automatic extensions, expired EAD).
  • E-Verify updates.

Ms. Aitken will discuss what changes are coming, the new E-Verify interfaces and status, along with some of the proposed changes and often overlooked aspects of the Form I-9. With government audits and penalties for non-compliance on the rise, proper management of the Form I-9 process is important.

With more targeted workplace investigations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and increased focus on strict immigration controls by the Trump Administration, companies in America must exercise extra due diligence in hiring practices and ensure workplace compliance.

In May 2018, ICE – which enforces federal laws governing border control, customs, trade, and immigration – announced that the agency’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) had already doubled the amount of ongoing worksite enforcement investigation cases in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 as compared to FY 2017.

From October 1, 2017, to May 4, 2018, HSI opened 3,510 worksite investigations and made 594 criminal and 610 administrative worksite-related arrests. For all of FY 2017 – October 2016 to September 2017 – HSI opened 1,716 worksite investigations and made 139 criminal and 172 administrative arrests.
