The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) – the world’s largest HR professional society – will hold the SHRM 2019 Talent Conference & Exposition in Nashville, Tennessee from April 8 to 10, 2019. The conference will feature screening industry leaders such as background expert Attorney Lester Rosen, the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Employment Screening Resources (ESR).

SHRM 2019 Talent Conference

Rosen will present a session at the conference entitled “The Use of Criminal Records in Hiring: Land Mines and Opportunities for Employers” on Monday, April 8, 2019, from 1:15 PM to 2:15 PM Central Standard Time. Attendees of the session hosted by Rosen will be updated on compliance issues with the use of criminal records by employers when hiring and the need for a fair chance hiring process.

Employers often utilize criminal record checks to avoid bad hiring decisions and negligent hiring lawsuits. In the one hour session, Rosen will explain how HR professionals need to understand the complexities involved in using criminal records, such the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidance on criminal records, “Ban the Box” laws, and accuracy and discrimination issues.

Rosen also will make a shorter presentation on the Smart Stage entitled “Social Media Background Screening. Is it Right for My Company?” earlier on Monday, April 8, 2019, from 10:45 AM to 11:03 AM Central Standard Time. The SHRM 2019 Talent Conference & Exposition will be held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center at 2800 Opryland Drive in Nashville, Tennessee.

Rosen – author of the “The Safe Hiring Manual” –  is a frequent presenter nationwide on background check issues and has testified as an expert witness in court cases. He was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), a non-profit trade organization for the background screening industry, and served as first co-chair.

Rosen also was interviewed for two articles by SHRM about screening trends for 2019, including how employers and background check firms will feel “pressure” to ensure information security and how employers are ramping up their use of social media screening, real-time employee monitoring, and considering job applicants with criminal records they may have once ignored.

The SHRM 2019 Talent Conference & Exposition will provide more than 1,400 attendees with over 80 sessions. Attendees will include recruiters who want to improve their strategies and build their network, talent management professionals who develop or sustain strategies, and HR managers and generalists responsible for recruiting, retaining, training and engaging.
