On August 23, 2019, a man linked to a decades-old cold case murder that occurred in Florida in 1998 after he applied for a job that required him to undergo a fingerprint background check in 2018 was sentenced to life in prison for the crime, according to a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that Todd Barket, 51, was convicted of first-degree murder and robbery charges by a Palm Beach County jury and sentenced to life in prison for the death of Sondra Better, 68, who was found murdered in a Delray Beach consignment store in August of 1998.

Detectives testifying during the trial said their big break in the case came when Barket applied for a job requiring a fingerprint background check in December of 2018 and was charged in March of 2019 after his fingerprints and DNA matched evidence from the crime scene, The Sun-Sentinel reported.

In April of 2019, ESR News reported that Barket, a former South Florida resident at the time of the killing who had later moved to Brandon, was arrested after fingerprints he submitted for a background check linked him to a decades-old murder of a woman found stabbed and bludgeoned to death.

ESR News reported that fingerprints and blood samples from the crime scene were entered into national databases, but police were unable to find a match and make an arrest until 20 years later when Barket submitted his fingerprints for a background check for a job in December of 2018.
