October 2019 Jobs Report Shows U.S. Economy Gained 128,000 Jobs in Month

The United States economy added 128,000 jobs during October of 2019 while the unemployment rate rose to 3.6 percent during the month, according to the October 2019 jobs report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The jobs report for October 2019 showed the number of unemployed persons increased to 5.9 million, while job gains occurred in food services and drinking places, social assistance, professional and business services, financial activities, and health care. Here are the job gains broken down by sector.

  • Food services and drinking places employment added 48,000 jobs in October and has averaged 38,000 jobs over the past three months.
  • Social assistance employment increased by 20,000 jobs in October and by 139,000 jobs over the last 12 months.
  • Professional and business services employment added 22,000 jobs in October and has added an average of 33,000 jobs per month thus far in 2019.
  • Financial activities employment rose by 16,000 jobs in October and has added 108,000 jobs over the last 12 months.
  • Health care employment rose by 15,000 jobs in October and has added 402,000 jobs over the last 12 months.

On the negative side, the jobs report showed manufacturing employment declined by 36,000 jobs and the federal government was down 17,000 jobs in October 2019. Employment in mining, construction, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, and information showed little change over the month.

The change in employment for August 2019 was revised from 168,000 jobs added to 219,000 jobs added while September 2019 was revised from 136,000 jobs added to 180,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in February 2019 and March 2019 combined were 95,000 more than previously reported.

The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for November 2019 is scheduled to be released on Friday, December 6, 2019. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
