FTC & CFPB Extend Deadline for Comments on Accuracy in Consumer Reporting

On December 20, 2019, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) extended the deadline to submit comments on an Accuracy in Consumer Reporting Workshop co-hosted by the two U.S. government agencies until January 31, 2020, according to a press release from the FTC.

The FTC and the CFPB held the Accuracy in Consumer Reporting Workshop on December 10, 2019. The Accuracy in Consumer Reporting Workshop brought together representatives from consumer reporting agencies (CRAs), trade associations, furnishers, and consumer advocacy organizations for a wide-ranging public discussion on the accuracy of consumer reports and included four panel discussions:

The original deadline for comments was January 10, 2020. At the request of the public, the FTC and CFPB agreed to provide additional time for the public to comment on issues such as what technologies, data management practices, and government and private sector measures could improve accuracy.

Comments can be filed electronically or with paper by writing “Accuracy in Consumer Reporting Workshop” on their comments and envelopes and mailing them to Federal Trade Commission, Office of the Secretary, Constitution Center, 400 7th St., SW, 5th Floor, Suite 5610, Washington, D.C., 20024.

The CFPB and FTC also enforce the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) that governs background checks in the United States. In 2018, the CFPB updated a document required by the FCRA for background checks called “A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act” (en Español).
