The EMP Trust HR webinar will feature speaker Gloria Aitken from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Aitken will provide insight into the new guidance on remote Form I-9 verifications during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and will discuss the new ‘Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification’ (Version Date “10/21/2019”) that employers must use by May 1, 2020.

In addition to a general overview of the Form I-9 and E-Verify process, Aitken will answer questions, share information on common mistakes and complex questions HR faces every day, show how to comply with the Form I-9 process and manage Form I-9 compliance, and offer guidance for users who want to know more about specialized topics that include the following:

  • The new Form I-9.
  • Reverification of employment authorization (rehires, etc.).
  • What to do when an employee’s employment authorization expires.
  • What to do when an Employment Authorization Document (I-766) expires.
  • E-Verify updates.
  • Completing Form I-9 for Remote Hires.

  • Accepting receipts (TPS, automatic extensions, expired EAD).

Ms. Aitken has been a public speaker and published author with the USCIS for over a decade. She joined the USCIS as a Management and Program Analyst in 2004, and has been routinely called upon to deliver presentations for congressional events. In addition, several county government entities have called upon her to assist them in developing Form I-9 (employment eligibility verification) best practices.

The “USCIS Webinar on Form I-9 Compliance with Questions Answered” takes place on Thursday, May 7, 2020, starting at 2:00 PM EST (11:00 AM PST) and is free to attendees. On January 31, 2020, the USCIS published a notice in the Federal Register announcing a new version of the Form I-9 that contains minor changes to the form and its instructions. Beginning May 1, 2020, all employers will be required to use the new version of the form for all new hires or for reverification. After April 30, 2020, employers who fail to use the new form may be subject to fines and penalties.
