The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has released detailed breakdowns of the Enforcement and Litigation Statistics for the 91,503 charges of workplace discrimination the agency received in fiscal year 2016, which was the second year in a row that the number of charges filed with EEOC increased. Appeals Court Rules Employer Willfully Violated FCRA with Liability Waiver on Background Check Disclosure Document

On January 20, 2017, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that employers can “willfully” violate the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) if they provide job applicants with a disclosure that a background check may be obtained for employment purposes that also includes a liability waiver for employers and others. Los Angeles Ban the Box Ordinance Takes Effect January 22

On December 9, 2016, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed into law a Ban the Box ordinance called the Fair Chance Initiative that requires employers to remove questions about criminal history from job applications and restricts them from asking job applicants about criminal convictions until after a conditional offer of employment. Sonoma County CA Court Workers Go on Strike

Sonoma County (CA) Superior Court workers have gone on strike after claiming contract negotiations broke down over pay and working conditions, as approximately 100 members of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local No. 1021 carried picket signs and chanted slogans in front of the Hall of Justice in Santa Rosa, California, according to a report from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Workplace Safety Index Finds One Billion Dollars Spent Each Week on Injuries in U.S. Workplaces

The 2017 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index produced by the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety has found more than $1 billion is spent each week on serious but non-fatal injuries in workplaces in the United States.
