FTC Warns of False Consumer Complaint Emails

ESR News BlogThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning small businesses that an email with a subject line of “Pending consumer complaint” that falsely states a complaint has been filed against their company is not from the FTC. The FTC advises recipients of the email not to click on any links or attachments in the email since they may install a virus or spyware on the recipient’s computer. IRS Investigates Tax Identity Theft and Refund Fraud

ESR News BlogLess than a week away from the tax filing deadline on April 15, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced the IRS Criminal Investigation started 295 new identity theft investigations since this filing season began in January 2014, pushing the number of active identity theft cases to more than 1,800. Data Brokers Settle FTC Charges of FCRA Violations

ESR News BlogTwo data brokers that sell public record information about consumers have agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that they violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by allegedly providing reports about consumers to users such as prospective employers and landlords without taking reasonable steps to make sure that they were accurate or that their users had a permissible reason to have those reports. New York State AG Secures Agreements with Background Check Firms

San Francisco Ban the Box Notice Available

Ban The BoxStarting August 13, 2014, the Fair Chance Ordinance (FCO) will require employers doing business in San Francisco with 20 or more employees to “Ban the Box” and remove questions on applications asking about the criminal history of job applicants. The San Francisco Office of Labor Standards Enforcement, which will enforce the Fair Chance Ordinance, has issued an English version of the Ban the Box notice that employers must post where readily accessible to job applicants and employees.
