New Pennsylvania Law Requires E-Verify Use for State Public Works Contractors and Subcontractors

A bill recently signed into law by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett – Act No. 127 (formerly Senate Bill 637), The Public Works Employment Verification Act – requires all public works contractors and subcontractors with the state to enroll in and use the federal E-Verify electronic employment eligibility verification system to verify the legal work authorization status of newly hired employees in the United States.  The text of the new legislation, which will take effect January 1, 2013, is available here: The Public Works Employment Verification Act. EEOC Meeting July 18 to Hear Input on Strategic Enforcement Plan to Combat Workplace Discrimination

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has announced it will hold a meeting on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time in the Commission Meeting Room on the First Floor of the EEOC Office Building, 131 M Street, NE, in Washington, D.C. At the meeting, the EEOC will hear publically from five roundtables of invited guests on what the agency’s priorities should be for its Strategic Enforcement Plan (SEP) over the next three years in order to have the greatest impact on combating discrimination in the workplace. Many Agencies Place Unqualified Caregivers in Homes of Elderly without Background Checks or Drug Testing

Social Network Screening by Employers May Make Companies Unattractive to Job Applicants

New Penn State University Background Check Policy Calls for Criminal History and Child Abuse Record Checks

A new background check policy at Penn State University (PSU) that took effect July 5, 2012 – HR99, “Background Check Process” – requires final job candidates and third-party employees who are offered employment to undergo a criminal background check that includes a criminal history check and child abuse record check before approval, according to a report on the Penn State Live website, the university’s official news source. June 2012 Employment Situation Report Shows US Economy Edged Up 80000 Jobs

According to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — JUNE 2012’ released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), total nonfarm payroll employment in the U.S. edged up 80,000 jobs in June 2012 while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.2 percent and the number of unemployed persons was also essentially unchanged at 12.7 million.
