December 2013 Employment Situation Report Shows Gain of Only 74000 Jobs

Total nonfarm employment in the United States edged up by only 74,000 jobs in December 2013 while the unemployment rate declined from 7 percent to 6.7 percent and the number of unemployed persons dropped from 10.9 million to 10.4 million, according to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — DECEMBER 2013’ released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. New and Revised E-Verify Memorandums of Understanding Now Effective for Existing Users

In December 2013, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released new and revised Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) related to the E-Verify electronic employment eligibility verification program. The MOUs have a revision date of June 1, 2013 that may be found at the bottom of each MOU page. The revised MOUs became effective for new users on December 8, 2013. Ban the Box Movement that Eliminates Criminal History Question from Job Applications Picking Up Momentum

The “Ban the Box” movement that seeks to eliminate questions about past criminal conduct on initial job applications is quickly heading towards becoming a national standard and will be a hot issue for employers in 2014. The “box” refers to where an applicant is asked to answer “yes” or “no” about a criminal past.  The idea is that asking about criminal records upfront serves as a potential early knock-out punch for ex-offenders that may otherwise be qualified.
