Massachusetts Pay Equity Law Prohibits Employers from Asking Applicants about Salary History before Job Offer

On August 1, 2016, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed a bipartisan pay equity bill – S.2119, An Act to Establish Pay Equity – to prevent wage discrimination on the basis of gender.  The new law also prohibits employers from requiring applicants to provide their salary history before receiving a formal job offer. S.2119 will take effect on July 1, 2018 for employers and employees in Massachusetts. Continue reading

OOIDA Members Lawsuit Challenges FMCSA Pre-Employment Screening Program

Six members of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) have filed a class action lawsuit in federal court in Boston, MA against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under the Federal Privacy Act, according to a press release from OOIDA. New Seattle Ban the Box Law Limits Use of Criminal History for Employment Screening Starting November 1

Employers in Seattle, Washington will need to comply with new “Ban the Box” legislation – Ordinance 124201 – that will limit the use criminal history records for employment screening during the initial hiring process starting on November 1, 2013. Employee Theft Rising as Dishonest Employees Steal More Profits from US Retailers

A study of 23 large retail companies found that 71,095 dishonest employees were apprehended for employee theft in 2012, up 5.5 percent from 2011, while more than $50 million was recovered in those cases, up 7 percent from 2011, according to the 25th Annual Retail Theft Survey conducted by Jack L. Hayes International.
