A new law in Rhode Island taking effect in October of 2016 – S 2864 as Amended – requires Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft who use third party Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) for the background screening of potential drivers to only use CRAs accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS®). Rhode Island Governor Lincoln D. Chafee has signed the 2014 Student and Employee Social Media Privacy Acts – 2014-S 2095Aaa and 2014-H 7124Aaa – to prevent potential employers or school admissions officers from asking applicants to provide login information or to sign into their social media accounts so an interviewer can view their online activities. Rhode Island Enacts Ban the Box Law Limiting Ability of Employers to Ask About Criminal History

The state of Rhode Island has enacted a “Ban the Box” law – Senate Bill 357 (SB 357) – that will prohibit inquiries on employment applications regarding prior criminal convictions except when federal or state law specifically disqualifies a person from employment due to a prior conviction or authorizes such inquiries.
