IRS Offers Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft for 2017

With the deadline for filing taxes nearing – Tuesday, April 18, 2017, because the usual Tax Day of April 15 falls on a weekend – the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is offering a Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft to help taxpayers combat “tax-related identity theft” that occurs when someone uses a stolen Social Security number (SSN) to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund. Study Finds Identity Theft Reached Record High 15.4 Million Victims in 2016

The 2017 Identity Fraud Study released by Javelin Strategy & Research has revealed that the number of identity theft victims increased 16% to reach 15.4 million U.S. consumers in 2016 – the highest number since Javelin began tracking fraud in 2003 – and that the amount of money taken rose by nearly one billion dollars to $16 billion.
